The Moon is moving from Cancer to Leo.

The Moon

The Moon is moving from Cancer to Leo in the next 24 hours.

Moon In Leo

With the moon in Leo, you're going to want that attention. That's just fine, but don't let that go to your head. Watch that you don't create drama as you do some self-promotion and build your brand. Make it happen while keeping an eye on not overdoing it.

Now is also a good time to reach out and make sure the important people in your life know how you feel. Feelings of insecurity shouldn't lead to conflict, so focus on the good and leave the angst for another time.

Full Moon In Leo

A full moon in Leo remind you to put on your own mask before helping others, but don't forget to actually help others! The Sun is in the sign of Aquarius which means we have a Leo Full Moon. Aquarius is very cold, and very distant from the heat of the Sun. The Full Moon in Leo brings a good balance to the depersonalized energy of the Aquarius sign. This transit reminds you that it’s okay to feel what’s in your heart, and to bring that out into the world. Full Moons are culminations so this is a great time to look at the seeds you planted during the New Moon and see if they’ve come to fruition.

The moon in cancer is your healing time. While your emotions are in focus, reach out to friends and family and remind them that they're important. Quality time is good, but be careful to maintain your independence and not become too reliant on others during this kick-back-and-chill time.

Be a home body for a while during the Cancer Moon, and spend some time with yourself.

Moon In Gemini

The moon in Gemini is your time to get social. Reach out and communicate, and remember that listening is always better than speaking. Negotiate now if you've got that on your plate. Do your research, pick up that book, and watch that documentary.

Why? Because Gemini moon means that you are also easily distracted, so something upon which to focus is a good idea, and some good progress can come of it.

The Sky This Week, 2022 January 11 - 18

Messier 42, the Great Nebula in Orion, imaged 2021 December 27 from Ocean City, Maryland
with an Antares Sentinel 80mm (3-inch) f/6 refractor, iOptron Cube Pro alt-az mount, and a Canon EOS Rebel SL2 DSLR.

The Moon waxes as she arcs through the stars of the Great Winter Circle this week, brightening the long chilly winter nights.  Full Moon occurs on the 17th at 6:48 pm Eastern Standard Time.  January’s Full Moon is popularly known as the Wolf Moon, a name that derives from old European accounts of wolves howling through the long nights.  Other names include the Ice Moon and Moon after Yule.  Look for the Moon to the south of the Pleiades star cluster on the evening of the 12th.  She passes between the “horns” of Taurus, the Bull, on the evening of the 14th before moving through the stars of Gemini to close out the week.

January is the month that features the stars of the Winter Circle as the showcase for nighttime viewing.  Somehow the colder air seems to accentuate the stars’ varied colors.  Despite the strengthening light of the waxing Moon, the collection of bright stars in this part of the sky seems to stand out more clearly than at other times of the year.  I have often marveled at how the stars of winter seem to add a sense of warmth on nights with frigid temperatures while brightening the darkness of the lengthy nights.  Ten of the thirty brightest stars in the entire sky lie within the confines of the Winter Circle asterism.

I still remember the cold January night when, as a child, I first “discovered” the three “Belt Stars” of Orion.  Although they were not the constellation’s brightest members, their near-perfect spacing and striking blue colors made them easy to spot night after night.  I soon learned to recognize the other constellations in the vicinity, but Orion always stood out.  After my first telescope arrived under the Christmas tree, I spent many cold January nights looking at each of the Hunter’s stars before stumbling on the group known as “The Sword”.  Amid the field of blue stellar beacons was a small knot of stars surrounded by a soft, fuzzy glow.  I had “discovered” the Great Orion Nebula.  Over the years I learned more about Orion’s stars as well as his wonderful non-stellar objects like the Great Nebula.  Even today I spend more time observing Orion than just about any other constellation.

Orion offers observers of any skill level a host of objects to delight the eye.  Even without a telescope, the contrast between the ruddy hue of the star Betelgeuse with the ice-blue tint of Rigel is striking.  Binoculars enhance this contrast and bring out the deeper blue tints of the Belt Stars.  Looking under the belt stars will reveal the gaggle of stars of the Sword, and in the middle you will see the brighter parts of the Great Nebula.  The small fuzzy patch that you see in binoculars becomes exquisitely detailed as you employ telescopes of larger apertures.  Even under bright suburban or moonlit skies the nebula becomes almost three dimensional, its brightly glowing core surrounded by dark whorls of opaque dust and gas.  In its center you will find a tight knot of four stars known as the Trapezium, and these stars are some of the youngest known in the galaxy.  The Great Nebula is a true stellar nursery, and almost all of Orion’s blue stars originated there.  It remains my favorite “deep sky” object in the sky.

The bright planets have now retreated to the early evening and pre-dawn sky.  As evening twilight falls, look to the southwest for bright Jupiter, which should be easy to spot about 20 minutes after sunset.  By 6:00 pm, if you trace a line from Jupiter to the sunset point on the horizon, you should be able to see the paler glow of Saturn about ten degrees above the horizon.  If you scan between Saturn and the horizon, you should be able to spot the somewhat brighter glow of the elusive planet Mercury, which will seem to hang in this part of the sky before beginning a precipitous drop toward the Sun by the end of the week.

If you’re up before dawn look to the southeastern sky as morning twilight begins to brighten the horizon.  You will find the stars of Scorpius becoming prominent, led by the bright red-hued Antares.  Thirteen degrees to the east of the star is another ruddy object, the planet Mars.  Over the course of the week the red planet will about five degrees further eastward from the star.  As twilight becomes brighter, keep an eye on the southeast horizon for the bright glow of Venus.  By 7:00 am she crests the horizon, and by the end of the week you should be able to see her more easily as she climbs away from the Sun’s glare.

Pay attention to your outlook and don't get stubborn or lazy! Create some art or make a bold style move. During the Taurus moon, it's a great time to reach for that special thing you desire.

Your passion and energy are on point while the moon is in Aries, so beware of being too self-focused and making rash and impulsive decisions during this time - and watch your temper! Perhaps you should put that energy into some exercise. Get out and move! Now is a good time to start a new project (but not one you can't finish!). But again, keep an eye out for impulsive decisions or picking fights, because remember - everyone else is feeling that impulsiveness as well!

Let that mysterious thing captivate you while the moon is in Aries. Go ahead and give yourself permission to explore, and don't worry about going it alone. Your independence will serve you well.

The Moon

The Moon is moving from Capricorn to Aquarius in the next 24 hours.

Moon In Aquarius

Pivot! Your originality is heightened while the moon is in Aquarius, so take advantage of it. Throw something into the mix for an ongoing project, or start up something just slightly off the wall. Consult with trusted advisors and bounce things off of them. Throw that spaghetti at the wall and see what sticks.

The moon in Aquarius pushes you to get in touch with friends and engage, perhaps even involving them in your nefarious plans. That said, your individuality is wanting to shine through when the moon is in Aquarius, so perhaps it's also a time for you do you! Let that spontaneous streak out?

New Moon In Aquarius

With a full moon in Aquarius, pay attention to the balance between your self-care and the care of others. The Aquarius New Moon encourages us to cut our past loose, or at least some of the things that we’re still hung up on. Aquarius is cool and detached, ideal for making a clean break from things that are no longer serving us so that we can boldly step into the next phase of our lives. Our innovative spirit is off the charts with the New Moon in unconventional Aquarius! When the Sun and Moon team up in this brainy sign, we have a greater ability to expand our perceptions and come up with bright ideas. Aquarius sometimes dreams up concepts so far ahead of its time that they cannot be applied to current circumstances. However, the New Moon helps put us in touch with reality so that we can bring these groundbreaking insights back down to earth.

The Moon

Moon In Capricorn

How much do you have left undone right now? Focus your attention on those unfinished projects and get them off your plate. Put in the work and while the moon is in Capricorn you're going to clear that todo list. Work smart! With the moon in conservative Capricorn, it's time to be a bit more cautious, focus seriously, and embrace that "down to earth" nature. Pay attention to the longer-term goals. During this Capricorn Moon, take note of your professional life. Put in the extra effort and it will pay off, and always keep your eye on the next move.

New Moon In Capricorn

A new moon in Capricorn reminds us that career and home require a delicate balance. Our calendar New Year begins with the Sun in Capricorn so the Capricorn New Moon is like the beginning of a brand new personal year. We think of it this way because it’s a time when we set our intentions for what we want in the year ahead. These goals become like a mountain, and that mountain becomes the object we set out to climb. Luckily, Capricorn has a determination that equips us with the patience, discipline, and persistence to reach the top.

Balance is the keyword with the moon in Libra. Resolve those conflicts and promote harmony. Be the diplomat you know you can be, but remember to stand your ground when you're strong on a point. You can be accommodating without giving in.

When the Moon is in the accommodating sign of Libra, you want to create tranquility and harmony. Libra doesn’t just appreciate balance, Libra also seeks out imbalance and gets medieval on it. Give in to that urge to win the Peace Prize. Libra’s sandbox is diplomacy, so the Moon in Libra gives you the ability to use your charm to get what you want.

Moon In Cancer

The moon in cancer is your healing time. While your emotions are in focus, reach out to friends and family and remind them that they're important. Quality time is good, but be careful to maintain your independence and not become too reliant on others during this kick-back-and-chill time.

Be a home body for a while during the Cancer Moon, and spend some time with yourself.

Full Moon In Cancer

A full moon in Cancer is your signal to watch your work/life balance. At the beginning of winter when the sun is in the sign of Capricorn, we have a Full Moon in Cancer. Capricorn is about the outer energy, and the mastery of our outer world. The Cancer Full Moon allows the energies of these two signs to counterbalance each other, and helps us bring to fruition those things that we held close during the New Moon. We’re finally able to manifest these things, and create a sense of security in bringing our feelings and desires out into the world.

The Sky This Week, 2021 December 14 - 21

Full Moon and Orion rising, Ocean City, Maryland
imaged 2020 December 29 with a Canon EOS Rebel SL2 DSLR.

The Moon brightens the sky as she waxes among the bright stars of the winter sky.  Full Moon occurs on the 18th at 11:35 pm Eastern Standard Time.  December’s Full Moon is popularly known as the Cold Moon, Long Night Moon, and Moon Before Yule.  Since the Full Moon occurs in the opposite part of the sky from the Sun, which reaches his most southerly declination on the solstice, Full Moon occurs at Luna’s highest declination for the year.  Her silvery glow adds a sublime illumination to the barren landscapes of boreal winter.

The winter solstice occurs on the 21st at 10:59 am EST.  This is the moment when the center of the Sun’s disc reaches an ecliptic longitude of 270 degrees, marking the onset of astronomical winter.  It is also the date of the longest night of the year.  Here in Washington Old Sol is above the horizon for just 9 hours 23 minutes on that date.  However, if you consult an almanac, you will notice that the time of sunset on the evening of the solstice is four minutes later than it was on December 7th.  That almanac will also show that the latest sunrise won’t occur until January 4th, when sunrise will be four minutes later than it is on the 21st.  By the end of the year sunset will be later still, and most people will probably begin to notice the gradually lengthening days.

Reports from the early morning of the 14th indicate that the Geminid meteor shower was very strong this year.  If you missed the peak you still may be able to catch several shower members before morning twilight on the 15th and 16th.  The waxing Moon encroaches on the evening and early morning hours’ viewing, but you will have an hour or so after moonset to look for these stragglers.  I managed to glimpse several despite moonlight and high clouds on the evening of the 13th from my suburban front yard.

December’s Full Moon occurs at the apex of one of the most visually attractive asterisms in the sky, Popularly known as the Great Winter Circle or Winter Hexagon, the asterism is delineated by seven colorful first magnitude stars.  It surrounds the magnificent constellation of Orion, the Hunter.  Orion is visible from every inhabited part of the Earth, and is one of the few constellations that can be easily identified from urban locations.  The Hunter’s brightest stars are the rose-tinted Betelgeuse and icy-blue Rigel.  Between these two are three blue-hued stars that mark Orion’s belt.  All of these stars are quite far away, ranging in distances from 500 to 2000 light years.  To appear as bright as they do in our sky, these luminaries must be intrinsically extremely bright.  Alnilam, the middle star in the Belt, is thought to shine with the equivalent luminosity of nearly half a million suns!  Many of Orion’s stars are blue supergiant stars like Alnilam, and they will exhaust their nuclear fuel in a matter of a few million years.  They will then evolve into red supergiants like Betelgeuse, a highly unstable star that will ultimately collapse on itself in a cataclysmic supernova explosion.  Betelgeuse’s reddish tint is due to its relatively cool surface, and its brightness is due to the vastness of that surface.  If Betelgeuse occupied the Sun’s position in our solar system, our Earth would orbit inside its outer layers!

Venus reaches a stationary point in her journey against the background stars on the 18th.  After that date she begins westward motion along the ecliptic as she begins to pass between the Earth and the Sun.  All of this leads to a precipitous drop from the evening sky between now and the end of the year.  She still dominates the western evening twilight sky, but soon she will only be visible in bright twilight.

Saturn appears in the later stages of twilight above and to the left of Venus’ dazzle.  The ringed planet is pale in comparison to his brighter neighbor, but there are no other comparably bright objects nearby.  His yellow tint stands out in contrast to the intense white of Venus and the creamy hue of Jupiter to the east.

Jupiter should be easy to find very shortly after sunset.  He lies just west of the meridian during evening twilight, which is the best time to train the telescope on him.  Earth’s rotation carries Old Jove quickly toward the horizon, so by the time it is fully dark he is becoming too low for a detailed view.

The Moon waxes in the evening sky this week, passing the gas giant planets as the week begins, then climbing toward the rising winter stars through the week’s end.  First Quarter occurs on the 10th at 8:36 pm Eastern Standard Time.  Look for Luna’s crescent to the southwest of Saturn on the evening of the 7th.  On the following night she forms a triangle with Saturn and bright Jupiter.

This is the week when residents of northern temperate latitudes experience the earliest sunsets of the year.  Here in Washington sunset occurs at 4:46 pm EST for the evenings up to the 11th.  By the 14th sunset will occur about a minute later.  In the meantime the times of sunrise continue to occur later each morning and will continue to do so through the end of the year.  By the start of the new year sunrise will be some 13 minutes later than it is on the 7th.  Between the time of latest sunrise and earliest sunset is the winter solstice, which will mark the shortest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere.

The night of the 13th and 14th marks the peak of the annual Geminid meteor shower.  Over the past several years this shower has become the most consistent meteor display of all the annual showers, with hourly rates of 60 to 80 or more meteors visible to a single observer under dark skies.  It is also one of the only major meteor showers to display good activity before midnight.  The radiant point is near the bright star Castor in the constellation of Gemini and rises early in the evening.  By late evening it is high in the eastern sky.  This year’s shower is partly obscured by the bright light of the 11 day-old Moon, but after 2:00 am Luna’s glare will have subsided and Gemini is high overhead.  The stream of particles that produces the Geminids originates from one of the solar system’s strangest objects, an asteroid known as 3200 Phaethon.  This was the first asteroid to be discovered by a satellite observatory, the Infrared Astronomical Satellite, which spotted it in 1983.  Phaethon is a member of the Apollo family of asteroids that have perihelia inside the orbit of the Earth.  Its orbit is quite eccentric and resembles those of periodic comets, which may belie its origin.  It passes closer to the Sun than any currently known named asteroid.

Gemini sits at the top of a large asterism that is now brightening the eastern sky.  Known as the “Great Winter Circle”, it comprises of several of the brightest and most colorful stars in the sky.  By 10:00 pm local time the Circle dominates the eastern sky surrounding the distinctive constellation of Orion, the Hunter.  Starting with Rigel, the bright blue “foot” of the Hunter, a counter-clockwise loop around the sky will bring your gaze to reddish Aldebaran in Tauris, golden Capella in Auriga, the Gemini Twins Castor and Pollux, whitish Procyon in Canis Minor, and finally the dazzling blue brilliance of Sirius, the brightest star in the heavens.  Within the bounds of the Circle you will find nine of the 25 brightest stars in the sky, a bright and colorful display in the sky that rivals any human-made light seasonal light show here on Earth.

Venus leads a lineup of bright planets in the early evening hours.  The dazzling planet is currently shining at her brightest for the year, and is easily seen in the southwest at sunset.  Catch her while you can, since she begins a precipitous plunge toward the Sun that will cause her to vanish into the Sun’s glare early in January.

Saturn may be found almost exactly halfway between his bright companions Jupiter and Saturn.  He receives a visit from the Moon on the evenings of the 7th and 8th.  His time in the sky is also limited, and by the end of the year he, too, will become harder to find after twilight’s end.

Jupiter brings up the rear of the planetary parade and can be seen high in the southwest as twilight gathers.  Old Jove is still a good target for the telescope in the early evening hours, but you need to hurry.  His bright glimmer sets by 10:00 pm.

Keep that optimistic outlook! Your positive attitude while the moon is in Sagittarius will go towards your success. That said, don't be impulsive. Temper the optimism with a good view on reality. Maybe now is a good time to plan that trip, though. Go get some exposure to someplace you've never been before. Soak up the experience. Be a visionary and recognize that your optimism is likely a bit peaked.

New Moon In Sagittarius

A new moon in Sagittarius reminds you that new information is always helpful. Seek it out. The Sagittarius New Moon asks us to plant the seeds of optimism. This is when we allow ourselves to leave the painful parts of our pasts behind so we can visualize a bigger and brighter future. This idealistic outlook doesn’t match the realities of everyone’s life. Many people are suffering in economic, emotional, physical, and spiritual ways. It’s not difficult to find areas of frustration and fear inside us and in the environment around us. You're finding hope, and all the wonderful things that hope brings. Instead of seeing a situation as it is, you will be able to imagine what your situation could be.

The Moon begins the week as a waning crescent in the pre-dawn sky, then flirts with dazzling Venus as the week wraps up. New Moon occurs on the 4th at 2:43 am Eastern Standard Time.  Early risers on the 2nd should look for the thin crescent less than a degree north of the second-magnitude star Zubenelgenubi, the southern “balance pan” in the constellation of Libra, the Scales.  By 6:30 am you should be able to see the ruddy glimmer of Mars halfway between the Moon and the horizon.  Luna will be just three degrees from Venus as evening twilight falls on the evening of the 6th.

When New Moon occurs, a lucky few people along with hordes of penguins and seals will be treated to a total solar eclipse.  The path of totality is restricted to parts of West Antarctica and adjacent waters in the Amundsen and Weddell Seas.

As we transition into the final month of 2021 we enter the period of the year when we experience our longest nights.  Throughout December we have less than ten hours of daylight, and the early sunsets mean that astronomers can get several hours of observing time before going to bed at a decent hour.  In fact, December 7th is the date of the year’s earliest sunset in most locales in the United States.  Here in the Washington, DC area Old Sol slips below the horizon at 4:46 pm EST for several evenings before and after the 7th.  However, the year’s latest sunrise won’t occur until early January 2022, so the shortest day falls on the 21st, the date of the winter solstice.

If you venture out at around 8:00 pm local time you will find yourself “squarely” under the autumnal constellations.  High in the south is the large “Great Square” asterism formed by the brightest stars of Pegasus, the legendary Flying Horse.  This grouping serves as a kind of celestial signpost to help locate some of the season’s other obscure constellations.  If you draw an imaginary line southward from the stars that form the Square’s western side your gaze will cross the dim constellation of Aquarius, the Water Bearer.  Continue southward and you will find the first-magnitude star Fomalhaut, the southernmost bright star visible from most of the U.S.  Draw a similar line through the stars on the eastern side of the Square and you will run into the second-magnitude star Diphda, brightest star in the constellation of Cetus, the Whale.  Draw another line from the lower right star in the Square through the star Alpheratz in the Square’s upper left corner and your gaze will parallel the diverging “chains” of stars that delineate Andromeda.  Under dark skies look just above the second star in Andromeda’s fainter “chain” for a small misty patch of light that resembles a small, detached portion of the Milky Way.  This amorphous glow is the light of some 200 billion stars that make up the Great Andromeda Galaxy, the Milky Way’s largest companion in a small galaxy cluster known as the Local Group.  Through binoculars or small telescopes the Andromeda Galaxy shines with a soft glow that brightens to a near pinpoint at its center.  An early observer likened its glow to “the light of a candle shining through horn”.  It is located about 2.5 million light years away from us, making it the most distant object that you can see with the naked eye.

Venus is now putting on her best show for the current evening apparition.  She reaches her brightest appearance on the 4th, when she also sets at her latest time of the year.  If you are under dark skies at around 6:30 pm, try to spot your shadow cast by Venus’ brilliant glow.

Saturn hangs between his brighter companions Venus and Jupiter and should be easy to find shortly after sunset.  The ringed planet is slowly drifting eastward against the stars of Capricornus, but his plodding motion is no match for the oncoming Sun.  You’re best views of him will be during twilight hours, and by the week’s end he sets well before 9:00 pm.

Jupiter gives owners of small telescopes something to look at in the twilight and early evening hours.  The giant planet is also moving eastward through Capricornus, but his time in the sky is limited as well.  He’ll hang around through the end of the year, but as January opens he will be fading fast.
